Biography
Dr. Shih started his graduate research by developing technologies associated with turbomachinery performance simulations. It led to the successful commercialization of a software package for turbomachinery meshing. During his tenure at NCSA, University of Illinois, he held the role of onsite lead in the Scientific Visualization area, collaborating with the Army Engineer Research Development Center for four years to develop and transfer cutting-edge visualization technologies to the research communities within the Department of Defense. Following this, Dr. Shih became a faculty member at UAB's Department of Mechanical Engineering, where he led the Enabling Technology Laboratory (ETLab). This lab concentrated its research efforts on numerical geometry, mesh generation, virtual environments, and high-performance computing. Dr. Shih served as the inaugural Director of the ETLab for nine years. His leadership and dedication to research fostered collaborations in various fields such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and health sciences. Notably, he secured consistent research funding from sponsors such as NASA, DOD, DOE, DHS, NIH, and industry partners. The outcomes of these research endeavors resulted in the disclosure of over 15 inventions by Dr. Shih and his colleagues at ETLab, many of which were successfully licensed and commercialized. Before joining CCNY, Dr. Shih assumed the role of VP of Business Development at Relecura, Inc., a company specializing in the development of patent analysis tools for intellectual property professionals.
Between 2005 and 2014, Dr. Shih served on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Modeling and Simulation Council (AMSC). This organization was established with the primary objective of creating an environment that promotes collaboration and cooperation among practitioners of modeling and simulation (M&S) nationwide, for the collective advancement of the industry.
Dr. Shih has actively engaged in organizing international conferences and has taken on the role of research mentor for students from the Ph.D. program to undergraduate and high school students. He currently holds the title of Associate Fellow at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
