Biography

Irmina Gradus-Pizlo was born in Warsaw, Poland. She obtained her medical degree from the Medical Academy of Warsaw and completed her internship at the Center for Post Medical Education Cardiology Clinic in Warsaw. In 1988, Dr. Gradus-Pizlo relocated to the United States where she worked at the National Institutes of Health as a guest researcher. After completing residency, internship and fellowship programs, Dr. Gradus-Pizlo finished a special year of training under the direction of Dr. Harvey Feigenbaum, who invented echocardiography at Indiana University. After joining the Krannert Institute, she developed the Indiana University Heart Failure Program and multidisciplinary Clarian Advanced Heart Care Program. Working closely with the directors of the Ventricular Assist Device and Heart Transplant Programs, the team initiated the Heart Failure Fellowship to educate physicians in complex therapies of patients with advanced heart disease. Since joining the IU School of Medicine faculty in 1999, Dr. Gradus-Pizlo has received the Outstanding Teacher Award presented by the trustees of Indiana University four times.
