Biography

Jian Chu is a professor and the James M. Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering. Before he took this position in August 2011, Dr. Chu was a well-established researcher and consultant in Southeast Asia. He was director of the Centre for Infrastructure Systems at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. There he spent 20 years teaching, conducting research and consulting in geotechnical engineering, particularly in soil properties, in-situ and laboratory testing, soil improvement and land reclamation. Dr. Chu also served five years as chairman of a technical committee for the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He also was vice president of the Geotechnical Society of Singapore. He led more than $10 million in research projects in Singapore before joining Iowa State. He has been a keynote or invited speaker at more than 40 international conferences, including the 17th International Conference for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Alexandria, Egypt, in 2009. He also is the co-editor, associate editor and editorial board member for nine international journals. He won the R. M. Quigley Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society in 2004 for publishing the best paper in Canadian Geotechnical Journal in 2003. He also received the Honorable Award from the Eurasian National University, Kazakhstan, and the Kazakhstan Geotechnical Society in 2013 for his great contributions to geotechnical engineering.
