Biography
Timothy J. Williamson, Ph.D., MPH, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychological
Science at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and the Director of the Psychosocial Risk &
Resilience in Stress & Medicine (PRRISM) Research Lab. He is a clinical health psychologist with
specialized training in public health and psychosocial oncology and a scholar in the research
areas of stress, stigma, and health.
Dr. Williamson uses qualitative and quantitative methods to understand how some psychological and social factors (e.g., stigma, social adversity) can increase risk for negative mental and physical health outcomes, whereas others (e.g., self-compassion, mindfulness) can promote resilience in the face of profoundly stressful experiences, including chronic medical diseases such as cancer.
Through independent and collaborative research, Dr. Williamson has focused his recent work on improving the scientific measurement lung cancer stigma, characterizing its consequences for patients’ health and well-being, identifying psychosocial sources of resilience, and developing intervention strategies to prevent and reduce lung cancer stigma.
