Description
MISSION: WHO WE ARE Our mission is to safeguard and promote the health, safety and welfare of the public through licensing and approval of qualified individuals and adopting and enforcing legal standards for nursing education and nursing practice. The Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) was established in 1915 by the Alabama Legislature to license qualified nurses in Alabama, to ensure quality educational preparation for all prospective nurses, and to enforce the Nurse Practice Act and the ABN Administrative Code. Currently, more than 97,000 nurses are licensed in the state. VISION: REGULATORY EXCELLENCE The ABN strives to promote and safeguard the health of the public through regulatory excellence. The ABN takes an active approach to collaboration with stakeholders by establishing Advisory Councils, to ensure that the views of the nursing and healthcare communities are always considered with Board decisions that affect delivery of care. To ensure Best Practices, the ABN remains an active member of state, national, and international organizations. These organizations include the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), the Federal Association of Regulatory Boards (FARB), the Council on Licensure, Enforcement, and Regulation (CLEAR), the Alabama Rural Health Association. Board members and staff participate in these organizations to access the vast resources available and to bring best practices back to the ABN. In so doing, the ABN can quickly adapt to the changing environment of healthcare delivery, nursing practice, nursing education, regulation, and licensing. VALUES: Integrity – Fairness – Objectivity – Quality – Collaboration – Innovation - Diversity
