Description
**Our Mission** We, Allegany Franciscan Ministries and Trinity Health, serve together in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming, healing presence within our communities. We are guided by this mission and rooted in the vision of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany. **Our Vision** The communities we serve will become ever more just, equitable, and caring; everyone in our communities will be welcomed and have the resources to thrive. **Our History** Allegany Franciscan Ministries grew out of the health care ministries of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, New York. The Sisters came to Miami, Florida in 1927 to serve and administer a hospital, later named St. Francis Hospital. The Sisters then took on St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, and St. Mary’s Hospital and Pine Ridge Hospital in West Palm Beach. In every case, these hospital ministries were devoted to meeting the needs of their poor, oppressed and disenfranchised sisters and brothers. Over the years, the ministries in each area grew and changed, always keeping the values of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany at their heart. In the late 1990’s the Sisters formed Catholic Health East (CHE), a multi-institutional Catholic health system. At the same time, they divested assets of their Florida healthcare partnerships and created Allegany Franciscan Foundations to serve Miami-Dade County, Tampa Bay and Palm Beach, Martin, and St. Lucie counties. A founding CEO was hired and offices opened and Allegany began to distribute grants to nonprofit partners. Following CHE’s merge with Trinity Health in 2013, Allegany Franciscan Ministries became a Mission Health Ministry of Trinity Health, one of largest multi-institutional Catholic health systems in the nation. Throughout its history, Allegany has made a concerted effort to develop strong relationships with grant seekers, grant partners and the non-profit and funding community in each region and across the state. Allegany’s signature project from 2015-2023 was the Common Good Initiative, a community-driven, place-based effort mobilizing communities toward better health and wellness. Through the initiative in Overtown, Lincoln Park, and Wimauma, Allegany supported residents and stakeholders to create opportunities, develop strategies and make investments that led to healthier, safer, and more connected places. Beginning in 2024, Allegany is investing in two new priority focus areas: Climate Justice & Care for Creation, and Nonprofit Capacity & Leadership.
