Description
**Mission**
CAMS develops and applies ultra-sensitive isotope-ratio measurement and ion-beam analytical techniques to solve problems of national significance that support the needs of DOE and the Nation.
**Vision**
Since its inception, the Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (CAMS) has operated as an institutional and programmatic science facility, designed to apply ion-beam analytical techniques to a broad spectrum of scientific needs of importance to the Laboratory, the university community, and the nation. In addition to active internal research programs, CAMS scientists enable a wide range of scientific research in the external community. CAMS is a globally recognized, state-of-the-art AMS facility that has had wide-spread scientific, technological, and analytical impact. The outreach and visibility that CAMS brings to the Laboratory through these activities is of immense value. It is a major factor to the recognition of the quality of science at LLNL. Maintaining its cutting-edge capabilities in science enables CAMS to provide important contributions to the technical needs of LLNL national security programs. By capitalizing on the tremendous opportunities that CAMS offers and by building upon its history of successful collaborative research and development with the academic community, CAMS will continue to engage faculty and students from campuses throughout the country to address scientific problems of national interest. These interactions will continue to advance development of ion-beam analytical technologies that will leverage national security needs and strengthen related programs at LLNL while serving as a potential recruitment tool.
Our vision and strategy is built upon a strong foundation of accomplishments. Our goal is for CAMS to provide a world-class center for research using long-lived, low-abundance radioisotopes and ion-beam tools to advance the frontiers of knowledge in forensics, biology, environment science, and public health. It will accelerate discoveries relevant to DOE's missions and the needs of the Nation through the development of cutting-edge technology and high-quality peer-reviewed research.
We will accomplish this by employing expert scientists and staff and encouraging multidisciplinary collaborations. CAMS will be a trusted and valued resource for solving problems of national significance, dedicated to providing scientific results and technological development second to none while training new generations of scientists in an innovative, multidisciplinary culture. Achieving this vision means that CAMS will be widely recognized for the following:
1. Developing cutting-edge technological capabilities that will advance scientific frontiers;
2. Integrating science and technology across disciplines and focusing expertise on important scientific challenges; and
3. Enabling a distinguished community of collaborators and users who are invested in and advocate the long-term use and success of CAMS.
We will advance the scientific reputation of CAMS and of our collaborators/users by engaging some of the best and brightest scientists from around the world who seek to accomplish their scientific objectives. Increased involvement of renowned scientists, high-impact publications, strategic partnerships, and recognition by the scientific community will be key metrics for our progress. This vision builds on CAMS' strengths in creating and integrating technological advancements and transformational capabilities to create a problem-solving environment for us, collaborators, and users.
