Lynden A. Archer, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering Lynden Archer joined the Cornell Engineering faculty in 2000. Prior to becoming the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering in 2020, he held a number of leadership positions in the college, including serving as director of the Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Physical Society, Archer’s research contributions have been recognized with a variety of awards from organizations like the National Science Foundation, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and Thomson-Reuters, which named him among the “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds” in 2014. At Cornell, his teaching contributions have been recognized with the James and Mary Tien Award, among other honors. Engineering College Council The Engineering College Council was created as an advisory board to the dean in the 1940s, during the administration of Solomon Cady Hollister. It was among Cornell’s first college advisory councils. The membership of the council includes people — both alumni and non-alumni — from industry and academia. The council advises the college administration on long-range planning and development in critical and strategic areas, including instruction, research, and industry collaboration. Cornell Engineering is a highly collaborative and dynamic intellectual community known for maintaining all-around excellence in educating students, pursuing groundbreaking research, and advancing technological innovations that impact people, communities, and the world.
