Description
**What We Do**
The mission of the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) is to increase geothermal energy deployment through research, development, and demonstration of innovative technologies that enhance exploration and production.
We work in partnership with industry, academia, the U.S. Department of Energy [national laboratories](https://www.energy.gov/national-laboratories), and others on research, development, and demonstration activities focused on these areas:
- [Enhanced Geothermal Systems](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/enhanced-geothermal-systems) (EGS)—Advancing commercial viability of EGS, with a focus on reservoir characterization, enhancement, and sustainability. Initiatives include [FORGE](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/forge), [Wells of Opportunity](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/wells-opportunity), and [Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) Pilot Demonstrations](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/funding-notice-enhanced-geothermal-systems-egs-pilot-demonstrations).
- [Hydrothermal Resources](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/hydrothermal-resources)—Improving geothermal exploration, subsurface characterization, and drilling to reduce overall geothermal deployment costs. Initiatives include [Hidden Systems](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/hidden-systems), [GeoFlight](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/geoflight), and [Drilling RDD](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/drilling-rdd).
- [Low-Temperature Coproduced Resources](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/low-temperature-coproduced-resources)—Improving the efficiency of low-temperature (<300° F) geothermal systems and expanding their utility through additional revenue streams, such as opportunities for geothermal energy storage. Initiatives include [Community Geothermal Heating and Cooling Design and Deployment](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/community-geothermal-heating-and-cooling-design-and-deployment) and [Federal Geothermal Partnerships](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/federal-geothermal-partnerships).
- [Data, Modeling, and Analysis](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/data-modeling-and-analysis)—Addressing nontechnical barriers to geothermal deployment with environmental and resource assessments, data stewardship, and analytical tools that advance geothermal exploration and development. Initiatives include the [GTO Multi-Year Program Plan](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/geothermal-technologies-office-multi-year-program-plan), the [U.S. Geothermal Power Production and District Heating Market Report](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/market-report), [Permitting for Geothermal Power Development Projects](https://www.energy.gov/eere/geothermal/permitting-geothermal-power-development-projects), and the [Geothermal Data Repository (GDR)](https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgdr.openei.org%2Fdata=05%7C02%7Cangie.spann%40ee.doe.gov%7C004a3699efc540f18a0608dc596ab0d7%7C6b183ecc4b554ed5b3f87f64be1c4138%7C0%7C0%7C638483561967595877%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7Csdata=iXsCEpmCv%2FCa%2B8W760WebdJOVTOxvWsDD9dtysRPmYg%3Dreserved=0).
