About Founded in 1973 with financial support from the Ukrainian-American community, HURI is a leading center for interdisciplinary research on Ukraine. Our Mission To advance knowledge of Ukraine through teaching, research, and publication in the humanities and the social sciences at Harvard and worldwide The Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University (HURI) was established to advance knowledge of Ukraine in the United States and abroad through research and teaching, particularly in history, language, and literature. With Ukraine's independence, our mission has broadened to include contemporary political, social, and economic issues. Our History Founded in June 1973, the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University (commonly known as HURI) serves as a focal point for graduate and undergraduate students, fellows, and associates pursuing research in Ukrainian language, literature, and history as well as in anthropology, archaeology, art history, economics, political science, sociology, theology, and other disciplines.
