Colonel Patrick S. Madigan, known as "The Father of Army Neuropsychiatry" was assistant to the Surgeon General of the United States Army from 1940 to 1943. On September 22, 1944, War Department General Orders 76 officially re-designated Fort Lewis General Hospital to Madigan General Hospital, after Colonel Patrick S. Madigan. Madigan General Hospital was formally dedicated in August 1945, and named in honor of Dr. Madigan, Medical Corps Officer who died on May 8, 1944.
