Description
Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry
Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) is Maine's support center for many land-based natural resource interests, including farms and forestry-related businesses, outdoor recreation, and public access to parks and public lands.
We strive to provide excellent customer service, and we facilitate a team approach to land-use planning, conservation efforts, business support, and economic activity. Our agency has a wide range of duties, from promoting and advancing Maine's agricultural resources; protecting and enhancing our vast forestland, which comprises 89% of our state's land base; managing more than 700,000 acres of state parks and public lands; and administering numerous science-based programs focused on resource management, wise land use planning, and conservation, while strengthening the base of scientific research and information for effective decision-making.
Maine's diverse product offerings, and food system, have grown from our state's geographically unique landscape and vast natural resources, including 3,500 miles of Atlantic coastline, approximately 1.3 million acres of agricultural land, and 18 million acres of forests. Our well-established farms produce high-quality products, including Maine's iconic wild blueberries, potatoes, and maple syrup. These and other sectors, such as dairy and grain, are catalyzing growth in value-added production, including award-winning cheese and craft beverages.
Through DACF's [Real Maine](https://www.realmaine.com) program, we connect people – throughout Maine and beyond – with our farmers and food producers. By sharing their stories and enhancing access to authentic Maine farm products and experiences, we support the growth of an industry that is an essential part of the state's economy and the quality of life enjoyed by Maine residents and visitors alike. We also recognize the integral connection between food and environment, and are committed to aligning policies and practices with climate goals embedded in Maine's climate action plan, including efforts to sustainably expand Maine's bioeconomy.
DACF welcomes opportunities to explore, evaluate, and develop markets for Maine agricultural, food, and forestry products at local, regional, national, and international levels.
