National Center for Special Education Research

The National Center for Special Education Research (NCSER) supports a comprehensive program of research to expand the knowledge and understanding of children and youth with or at risk for disabilities, from infancy through postsecondary education. How we improve education outcomes Research and Training Programs **NCSER funds and coordinates high-quality, cutting-edge research that provides insight into the challenges facing special education and explores possible solutions** We address issues in special education through our Research Grants Program, Special Education Research and Development Centers, Partnerships, Research Training Programs, and Research Networks. Our goal is to conduct research that advances knowledge within the field and addresses issues important to education policymakers and practitioners. Current and Past Funding **NCSER engages in research, development, evaluation, and national leadership activities aimed at improving child outcomes.** NCSER researchers have made important progress in understanding factors related to academic growth, developing measurement systems integral to documenting skill development and learning, and developing and testing programs and practices designed to improve education outcomes, broadly defined to include school readiness, academic achievement, behaviors that support learning, and the functional outcomes that improve educational results and transition outcomes to employment, independent living, and postsecondary education. The work of NCSER researchers captures the developmental range of birth through young adulthood in the 13 disability categories recognized in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which include sensory impairments, developmental delays, speech and language impairments, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbance.
