The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) is made up of about 750 federal employees—scientists, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. Its headquarters offices are in downtown Washington, DC, and in Germantown, MD. The organization also includes the National Energy Technology Laboratory with offices in Morgantown, WV, Pittsburgh, PA, Sugar Land, TX, and Albany, OR.
FECM conducts research, development, demonstration, and deployment to minimize the environmental and climate impacts of fossil fuel and industrial processes while working to achieve net-zero emissions across the U.S. economy. Priority areas of technology work include carbon capture, carbon conversion, carbon dioxide removal, carbon dioxide transport and storage, hydrogen production with carbon management, methane emissions reduction, and critical minerals production. FECM is committed to improving the economic and environmental conditions of communities, retaining, and creating good-paying jobs, and supporting domestic energy, industrial production, and manufacturing across our nation.
