Office of Strategic Initiatives

The MPS Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI) supports crosscutting research, education and infrastructure in areas of strategic importance for the U.S. National Science Foundation's mission and the broader U.S. scientific enterprise. OSI engages with the entire mathematical and physical sciences research community through the five MPS divisions: Astronomical Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences and Physics. The office also partners with other federal agencies, national laboratories, private industry, state and local governments and international organizations. A key focus for OSI is supporting innovative methods to expand and broaden the U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce, including providing supplemental support for students and researchers from underrepresented groups, including veterans and those with disabilities.
