Description
The United States established diplomatic relations with Egypt on April 26, 1922, following Egypt’s independence from its protectorate status under the United Kingdom. U.S. Diplomatic Agent and Consul General in Cairo, J. Morton Howell, had conducted unofficial relations with Egypt as a “semi-independent state” prior to this date, as had been U.S. practice since 1849, when the first U.S. diplomatic agent and consul general arrived in Cairo. Upon recognition, Howell served as the U.S. diplomatic representative to Egypt, and the position of Diplomatic Agent was raised to the rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary on June 24, 1922, thereby establishing the American Legation in Egypt. Somerville Pinkney Tuck Jr. was appointed the first U.S. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Egypt on September 19, 1946, and presented his credentials to the Egyptian government on October 10, 1946, elevating the legation to an embassy.
The United States and Egypt share a strong partnership based on mutual interests in Middle East peace and stability, economic opportunity, and regional security. Significant cultural and educational ties and assistance further enhance the strategic partnership.
