Description
**About Us**
The Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine is committed to providing exceptional family-centered care for patients, supporting innovative research, and educating the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric scientists. We are affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital.
We have twelve subspecialty divisions within the department that include dozens of associated programs, services, clinics and outpatient care sites. We provide subspecialty consultative services and facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of pediatric disorders, and remain a leading regional referral for high-risk neonates.
Welcome from the Chair
I am thrilled to serve as the Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and to virtually welcome you! Improving children’s health is at the core of everything we do, whether it is providing the latest therapies, collaborating on groundbreaking scientific discoveries, or mentoring the next generation of pediatrician-scientists. Our faculty and staff are experts and innovators in their fields, national leaders in education and patient safety initiatives, and engaged advocates for health equity on campus and beyond.
Exceptional family- and patient-centered care and support remain at the center of our mission. Located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, we are affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center (NYP/WCM) and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital, the top-ranked children’s hospital in the New York metropolitan area in U.S. News & World Report rankings. We provide inpatient and outpatient pediatric care in conjunction with affiliated hospitals NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.
Our Department is committed to promoting basic, clinical, and quality research that will help us improve pediatric health, from bench to bedside. Working across specialties, our researchers tackle vital questions in fields such as immunology, pulmonology, cancer, genetics, neonatology, and other areas of focus in child, adolescent, and young adult health. We are enrolling a diverse population of pediatric patients across three boroughs of NYC with research partnerships at NYP Queens and NYP Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Our faculty and trainees partner with colleagues at the Gale and Ira Drukier Institute for Children’s Health, the Tri-Institutional (Tri-I) consortium (Weill Cornell Medicine, The Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center), Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University and other institutions nationally and globally.
Through our superb Pediatric Residency Program and 13 Fellowships, we recruit and train diverse, exceptional pediatricians and physician-scientists who will become the next generation of leaders in children’s health. In August 2021, our residency program launched the highly-competitive Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) in conjunction with our Tri-I partners. The PSTP aims to train pediatrician scientists to lead scientific discovery that can be translated into the development, implementation, and evaluation of novel therapies for pediatric patients.
We have robust collaborations with colleagues working in children’s health across campus and our patients and trainees benefit from our long partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as Cornell University, including the School of Veterinary Medicine. Of note, an exciting NYP Komansky and Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital bicampus innovation is our Collective Power initiative, with projects focusing on everything from rapid genome sequencing program and pediatric transfusion to a joint pediatric epilepsy surgery program and a joint visiting professorship, to name a few. This past year, we also initiated the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medicine Transdepartmental Children’s Health Council, a group of leaders from each clinical department fostering cross-departmental efforts in children’s health across the clinical, research and educational missions at WCM/NYP.
Interwoven in everything we do across our missions is our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. We have charged a Health Equity Task Force to break down healthcare disparities, grown the membership of our Pediatric Diversity Coalition, and increased our Diversity Grand Rounds and Town Halls, adding a Race, Equity and Social Justice series. We continue to expand the career pipeline through our pediatric minority housestaff committee, networking mixers, and diversity open houses for prospective trainees. We strive to make meaningful, transformative change in the lives of children and families through equitable care.
