Description
In January 2024, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced a comprehensive reorganization of its information technology functions, marked by the establishment of a new independent and consolidated office: the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO).
Through OCIO, NSF seeks to ensure that information technology, technology innovation and data are supported by a centralized structure bolstered with the right resources, which will be critical to the agency's mission now and into the future.
The office oversees and coordinates the following activities at NSF:
- Digital innovation and governance.
- Data and artificial intelligence (AI) services.
- Development, operation and security of IT services.
OCIO was organized in response to the "CHIPS and Science Act of 2022." It is a part of NSF's broader initiative to meet the demands of an ever-evolving technological landscape by adapting to industry best practices and promoting leading-edge technologies.
